John joins the company from Triumph Interiors and has extensive experience in the aviation industry.Tom Kirrane assumes the position of Project Aircraft and Line Maintenance Manager. Tom has over 20 years service with the company and is now responsible for developing the company’s new services in Line Maintenance and Project Aircraft Maintenance.
AAAE is also pleased to announce the appointment of Adrian Foley and Martin O’Boyle as Sales Managers.
Martin Purcell has taken over the role of Production Manager and Paul McInerney has taken the position of Training Manager

Date: 22nd April 2004: The Air Atlanta Aviation Group (AAAG) has unveiled their new aircraft maintenance facility, Air Atlanta Aero Engineering (AAAE).Air Atlanta Aero Engineering was officially open at Shannon Airport, Co. Clare, Ireland, on 22 April 2004 by the Irish Minister for Transport, Mr. Seamus Brennan, and his Icelandic counterpart, Mr. Sturla Bodvarsson, Minister of Transport, Tourism and Telecommunications. The aircraft maintenance company performs heavy maintenance on B727 and 737 aircraft and will add B757, 767 and 747 capability over the coming months.
Air Atlanta Aero Engineering was formed with the purchase of Shannon MRO by the Air Atlanta Aviation Group from UPS in February 2004. Originally founded in 1962 the company employs 160 staff at it new state of the art facility at Shannon. Following the purchase the company announced a major expansion plan. In addition to the new aircraft types up to 30 new staff will be employed during 2004 and a similar number in 2005 with the potential for further jobs over the next several years.
Speaking at the launch, Air Atlanta Aero Engineering Managing Director, John O'Loughlin said that "Becoming part of AAAG represents a tremendous opportunity for the company and its workforce. The large fleet within the group and a growing third party base should result in the company expanding the range of services it offers and this will require the addition of over 60 staff over the next two years."
The company will provide maintenance services to Air Atlanta Aviation Group companies and third party airlines. Group companies include Air Atlanta Icelandic operating B747,757 and 767s, Air Atlanta Europe (UK) operating B757,767, 747, and Islandsflug (Iceland) operating B737s. Associate company Excel Airways (UK) operates a fleet B737 aircraft and a number of B757 and 767s from Air Atlanta. In addition the company will continue to provide support to UPS on their B727 fleet for the next two years.
Air Atlanta is the world's largest ACMI airline in the world specializing in providing short and long-term aircraft leasing to customer airlines that need additional capacity or wishing to develop new routes. Headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland the company specializes in leasing aircraft to some of the world's largest passenger and cargo airlines and is one of Iceland's leading companies. The acquisition of the Shannon facility is a major step in the groups plans to develop an integrated aviation focused group.
Commenting on the acquisition, AAIG Board Director and primary shareholder Magnus Thorsteinsson said "The acquisition of Air Atlanta Aero Engineering is a major part of the AAAG's development. The excellent maintenance provided by AAAE will play a key role in the group's plans to consolidate its position as the leading ACMI airline group in the world. The new state of the art facility and the highly qualified staff will provide the AAAG airlines high quality maintenance that will allow us to provide consistent and reliable service to our airline customers. We look forward to growing the company in line with the projected growth of the group over the next few years."
Air Atlanta Aero Engineering
Date: 3rd Feb 2004: Shannon MRO was acquired by the Air Atlanta Group on 2nd February 2004.Over the coming weeks, the company will change its name to Air Atlanta Aero Engineering.
The company has significant development plans and will add the B757, 767 and 747 to our existing B727, 737 and DC8 capability over the coming months. As a result we will be seeking additional staff. Please see our recruitment section for further details.

B737 Contracts
Nov 2003: SMRO has contracted to work on B737-800 aircraft from Air Europa (2 x c-checks) and GECAS (Bridging)New Facility
Feb 2003: First third party heavy maintenance check performed. SMRO carried out a C-Check on a B737 from Aegean Airlines, Greece. The check was successfully completed within the allocated downtime.Shannon MRO commenced operations in their new state-of-the-art hangar on 16 October 2002. The first aircraft into the facility was a UPS B727QF, OY-UPD for the performance of elevator rib modifications. The first C-Check commenced on the 22 October. This brand new facility provides Shannon MRO with more than double its current capacity and will allow Shannon MRO to offer a more comprehensive range of services to both UPS and its third party customers.
SMRO completed the last check, a D-Check on a UPS B727QF, N906UP, in the old facility on the 15 November 02.
